As I struggle to wrap up to Top 10 list for 8-bit Platformers, I'm very happy to announce a new member of the staff, Paul DeMarte. I'd rather let his work speak for itself, so this will be a brief intro. Suffice it to say, writing well, being creative, and having a passion for retro video games is a potent recipe. That Paul also tackles the Sega Master System—a console I didn't grow up with and often don't do justice—is a bonus. Without further ado, I present you a narrative that reflects on the significance of the art in instruction booklets for SMS games.

Giant punching fists of doom. Random ghosts who hunt you down. Evil leaping frogs. Killer motorcycles. Pedal-powered personal helicopters. What more can you ask for? It's all here! One of Sega's more bizarre and creative games stands the test of time as one of the best platformers of the era. At least! You could easily argue that it is one of the greatest platformers ever, but that's another larger (more research-intensive) list for another time. For the moment, just read past the break and enjoy.

About time some real content started appearing on this damn site again! Let's get this Top 10 started with a famous title (or two) that deals with the most mysterious and clever assassin of all: the ninja.
